Smoke-free air laws effective at protecting children from secondhand smoke

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health have found that children and adolescents living in non-smoking homes in counties with laws promoting smoke-free public places have significantly lower levels of a common biomarker of secondhand smoke exposure than those living in counties with no smoke-free laws.

Emerging new technologies in Pharmacogenomics: rapid SNP detection, molecular dynamic simulation, and QSAR analysis methods to validate clinically important genetic variants of human ABC Transporter ABCB1 (P-gp/MDR1).

Pharmacol Ther. 2010 Apr;126(1):69-81

Authors: Ishikawa T, Sakurai A, Hirano H, Lezhava A, Sakurai M, Hayashizaki Y

Pharmacogenomics, the study of the influence of genetic factors on drug action, is increasingly important for predicting pharmacokinetics profiles and/or adverse reactions to drugs.

Pharmacogenetics of immunosuppressant polymorphism of CYP3A5 in renal transplant recipients.

Transplant Proc. 2010 Jan-Feb;42(1):257-9

Authors: Larriba J, Imperiali N, Groppa R, Giordani C, Algranatti S, Redal MA

The tacrolimus is metabolized primarily by CYP3A5, a member of the single nucleotide polymorphism family. It shows cytochrome P450 (SNP) in intron 3, which consists of a change of base, G for A, producing a stop codon. The result is a nonfunctional protein (allele *3).

Dealing with the evidence dilemma in genomics and personalized medicine.

Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2010 Jun;87(6):635-8

Authors: Khoury MJ

In this commentary, I discuss how the promise of genomics and personalized medicine (GPM) is currently not matched by the evidence that supports its use in clinical practice.

Pharmacogenetics for type 2 diabetes: practical considerations for study design.

J Diabetes Sci Technol. 2009;3(4):705-9

Authors: Vella A

There is a relative dearth of studies designed to elucidate genetic variation that can explain differences in the response to diabetes pharmacotherapy. When designing such studies, appropriate consideration of the various nongenetic variables that can affect the treatment response is necessary.

The case for personalized medicine.

J Diabetes Sci Technol. 2009;3(4):680-4

Authors: Abrahams E, Silver M

Personalized medicine may be considered an extension of traditional approaches to understanding and treating disease, but with greater precision. Physicians may now use a patient's genetic variation or expression profile as well as protein and metabolic markers to guide the selection of certain drugs or treatments.

Malaysian Study Further Validates GeneNews' ColonSentry™ Test

Date: Thu, 2010-06-03 05:00
Body:

GeneNews Limited (GEN), a company focused on developing blood-based biomarker tests for the early detection of diseases and personalized health management, announced that an abstract describing a 210-patient Malaysian study entitled "Blood-based Seven-gene Biomarker Panel for Colorectal Cancer: Validation in Malaysia" was presented yesterday at the 2010 National Committee for Clinical Research conference, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 2 to 4.

The abstract reported on the application of the seven gene biomarker panel to 99 colorectal cancer patients and 111 controls. The seven gene biomarker panel forms the basis of the company's lead product, ColonSentry™, the world's first blood test for colorectal cancer.

Ongoing challenges in drug interaction safety: from exposure to pharmacogenomics.

Drug Metab Pharmacokinet. 2010;25(1):62-71

Authors: Bai JP

The complex transporter-cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme interplay in the disposition of drugs makes it very challenging to address the safety of clinical drug interactions. Thus, two major subjects are discussed herein.
